There will be no questions from the audience. Instead, each candidate will speak from a prepared text. The Q&A portion will be interspersed with clips from the debate held at New London High School on Jan. 17. Candidates in the race are Democrat John Bellm, independent Eliot “Eli” Best and incumbent Democrat Alan “Skip” Lynch. One of the candidates, Eric Best, backed Bellm for school board in 2012, but withdrew his support for Bellm after the candidate released a financial statement for 2012. Best is running for the seat vacated when Lynch stepped down to accept a nomination for U.S. Congress in May. The new school board members will take office in March. Brett Bruen, the Republican/Democrat Party of New London candidate for governor, will also participate in the debate. Bruen is also challenging incumbent Democrat Susan Ure in the May 4 primary. Registration for the debate can be completed here. Voters who can’t attend the debate may register to vote and cast their ballots in person on Feb. 4 at the Board of Education office, 1086 Forest St., New London. Polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Republican/Democrat Party of New London has agreed to allow candidates to debate in March before the primary elections in May, rather than delaying the debates until after the general election in November, which could have led to a crowded media schedule. The debate also allows for candidates to face questions from audience members. The forum will be streamed live to the web at newlondonpma.org.
